Safety Recommendations From Your Friendly Police Team

With the holiday season quickly approaching it is time to increase security and take steps to reduce the risk of being targeted by those people who believe it is their right to steal your property.

I’m talking about the minority of offenders who commit the majority of crime in our area, specifically burglaries and vehicle related offences.

Police and Neighbourhood Support have put together some tips on home security around the holiday period.

Holiday Security Tips

Most burglaries are opportunist and happen when owners are away. Unfortunately it is necessary to be especially careful at Christmas time, as homes are more often empty with many people out shopping, socializing or on holiday. Burglars are also aware that most houses have presents to steal.

While enjoying the festive season and your holiday, please don’t overlook your home security.

Taking a few simple precautions will help to deter all but themost determined burglar.

General Home Security Tips

  • Shut and lock all doors, even if you’re only going out for a short time.
  • Close and lock all windows — burglars don’t like to smash glass.
  • Don’t “hide” keys outside your home or leave them in obvious places near doors or windows.
  • Keep valuables (like TVs and stereo systems) out of sight from windows.
  • Don’t leave car keys near doors or windows — car theft through burglary is increasing.
  • Deadlocks make it harder for burglars to leave with your goods; install one on the internal garage access door too.
  • Window locks deter burglars, as smashing glass draws attention and leaves forensic evidence.
  • Spy holes and door chains let you safely see who’s at the door without opening it.
  • Consider engraving your property — it discourages theft by making resale harder.
  • Keep an up-to-date list and photos of your valuables and store copies securely.
  • Homes with visible security measures are much less likely to be burgled.

Make Your Home Look Occupied

  • Use timers on radios and lights to create the illusion someone is home.
  • When you buy new expensive items, don’t advertise it: turn the empty boxes inside out and fold them before putting them out for recycling.

Extra Security Measures

  • Install visible burglar alarms (but ensure they shut off after a few minutes to avoid disturbing neighbours).
  • Add security lighting near entry points (position carefully so it doesn’t disturb neighbours).
  • Hide or lock away passports and important documents to prevent identity fraud.

Outdoor and Garage Security

  • Lock away garden tools and ladders so they can’t be used to access your home.

When You Go on Holiday

  • Use timers on radios and lights.
  • Cancel milk, newspaper, and mail deliveries.
  • Ask a neighbour to:
    • Collect junk mail
    • Open and close curtains
    • Use your driveway or clothesline to make the house look lived in
  • Let neighbours know:
    • When you’ll be back
    • How to contact you in an emergency
  • Lock away garden tools and ladders.
  • Arrange for family pets to be cared for.
  • If away for more than a few days, arrange to have the lawns mown.
  • Consider inviting a friend or relative to house-sit.
  • Don’t leave a message on your answering machine saying you’re away. Instead:
    • Clear messages yourself
    • Or have a friend check them regularly
